5 tips for easy relaxation

With the holidays having just passed us, and a large many people feeling the effects of stress and frustration, it’s time to share a few tips on how to relax. Stress can easily take its toll on the body, causing a deterioration of both body and mind. Fight the effects of stress with these easy tips:
  1. Take a breath. A deep breath. Now exhale. Deep breathing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to convince your body to release any stress. When you breathe into you abdomen and allow the air to fill you up, you are maximizing oxygen. It is also possible to practice deep breathing anywhere and anytime.
  2. Give yourself five minutes to do whatever you want. Read a page in a book, wash your face, or take a quick walk around your house/neighbourhood to stretch your legs. Just as long as it’s something for yourself.
  3. Drink something warm and non-caffeinated and enjoy the flavour. Enjoy the warmth and relaxation of the steam as it wafts into your face as you take each sip. Drinking a warm, soothing drink forces you to take your time and enjoy what you are ingesting, and taking your time will allow you time to release your thoughts.
  4. Turn on your favourite song and just sit and listen to it. Remember why you like this song, and think about what memories it brings back to you. Music has the ability to impress its energy upon us, so if you are trying to relax try to choose a calmer more relaxing song instead of a more upbeat one.
  5. Do something physical, get your blood moving. It will release endorphins, which will relax you from the chemical side. This can be a way to release and let go of stress or anger without inflicting it onto anyone else. This works particularly well if you do it outside, as the fresh air has a rejuvenating sensation and the sunlight can assist in resetting priorities.
By taking the time to accept that you are stressed, and taking the steps to soothe your mind, you are taking control of your own life. Try to do at least one relaxing thing per day, and you will notice the benefits.

What do you do to relax, either at the start, middle, or end of your day?

Memories

How do you qualify and quantify your memories? Are they in physical objects, such as photos, knick-knacks, old artwork or books?

Focusing on objects of memorabilia, do they bring back pleasant or happy memories? An object that you have in your home should remind you of happiness or at least bring a smile to your face. If it isn’t, it’s time to figure out why you’re still holding onto it.

Negative Memories

Is it guilt over a failed relationship? We’ve all been there, trying to hold onto a relationship, whether platonic or romantic, that just didn’t work despite everything. Don’t hold onto your pain, tell yourself that it’s alright, and let it go.

Do you feel obligated to hold onto it, because it’s from family or a friend, and you don’t want to (or are afraid to) tell them why it’s gone if they ask? If someone truly cares about you and your emotional wellbeing, they probably won’t notice (unless it’s something big) and if they do, they will surely understand. Take the time to talk to people, if you are getting rid of it, explain why or at least tell them that you are passing it on to the less fortunate by donating it. Very few people take offense to the thought that their gift will be enjoyed by more than one person.

No matter the reason that you hold onto these negative or neutral memories, any memory that you are keeping in the form of a physical object should be cherished and appreciated. The objects in your home should represent the love and happiness that you want to surround you.

If you want to rehash the past because you think it will ease your mind, do it! Don’t spend your time planning words that you won’t say. Start slow and use “I” statements. If you want to do this, start with something more recent and probably less painful. Something that was hurtful or negative that you want to resolve before it starts to fester.

Before you approach the source of the negativity, try to rationalize your thoughts and get them in order. Think through what you want to say and how you want to say it. Sort out your thoughts and emotions and write them down. When your words and thoughts are organized, it will be easier to think clearly and express yourself. Then open with an “I” statement:
  • I feel that your words were/are harsh and hurtful
  • I didn’t like how you spoke of
Don’t put bias or judgment in your words, that will only cause hostility and anger and that won’t help to ease your own personal painful memory. Just express the way that you felt/feel and how it affected you without putting any blame on them. It may have been their fault, but accusing them will not make anything better.

Positive Memories

Do you have photos and trinkets around that remind you of positive and happy memories? Sources of good memories can often make or break how you feel about yourself. If you have a lot of reminder of the good things in your life, then when a sadness or depression strikes you will have the power and the tools in your environment to fight it and bounce back easily.

Are there some pieces of memorabilia that you would like to showcase more? Go through what you have out right now and reassess how it makes you feel. Does any of it cause you to feel resentment or frustration? If you have a negative reaction to something you have presented, get rid of it! You don’t deserve to have something in open sight that causes you mental or psychological distress. Surround yourself with the most powerful memories possible and reap the psychological benefits.

Getting rid of weak or negative memories

When going through your possessions, you will likely come across an item that brings back a negative memory. Decide what you are going to do about it. Are you going to hold onto it, or get rid of it? Are you ready to release the memory and the accompanying emotions?
If you plan on keeping it, are you going to put it in the open so that visitors may see it and ask about it, or will you put it away so that you don’t have to look at it? Putting it away will only cause you to push the emotional response from that item down and may cause undue stress, so if you do that I would recommend making a note to yourself to revisit it when you have thought it through and may be in a better position to deal with the item and its accompanying memories.

Having memories surrounding you with good times and pleasant thoughts is always a good thing, but remember to live in the present and not to dwell too much on what has passed. Life is for the living, so remember to experience it while it’s here, and create new happy memories.

Speechless

Maybe it's the weather, and maybe it's just me, but it seems like it's getting harder to express yourself. Walls are closing in and looks are given for the smallest of variances from the norm.

But what is the norm? And why can't it change?

Should those with creativity be forced to live in a world and mindset that does not permit use of their talents? Sometimes it seems like dreaming of becoming something or someone that doesn't bring in a huge salary is looked down on. Why should everything be about making lots of money? Is it so hard to believe that you can be satisfied with your life without being a millionaire?

It boggles my brain, as I find my consciousness awakening from within my own mind, that people are so distracted that they don't realize they're being herded.

Each and every person has the capability to help make the world less stressful, more satisfying and more relaxing than before.

To do so is unbelievably simple, yet unbelivably challenging at the same time. Each person, if/when they awaken to themselves, needs only to stop talking. Stop talking without thinking about what you're saying. You don't need to be in contact with hundreds of people at the same time, because doing so only perpetrates the image that you need to be in contact with people to be successful and feel content.

It's a hard fact, but you don't. To be content with your life and the people around you, you first need to be content with yourself.

This is why I am advocating and repeating and underlining the fact that you need to do things for yourself, and you need to do them consciously. Because your subconscious mind, normally, just wants to go with the flow. Well, right now the river is flowing in such a way that will not improve the quality of life for anyone.

So don't be afraid to push against the crowd, you may discover more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

Monday Musing: Automatic negative reactions

Changes in perspective are a necessary part of growing up and maturing. Understanding your own reaction to other people's comments and attitudes is essential.

I don't like being wrong. I hate it when someone points out something I've either done wrong or forgotten. It makes me feel inadequate, inferior, and useless. But I have no reason to take out my anger and denial on those I love. My wife was getting the anger because I didn't want to admit that my behaviour may have been wrong.

Now that I have acknowledged and validated that thought process within myself, I can stop myself when I feel it happening. I can notice it and stop myself to pay attention to what is causing this reaction.

Paying attention to negative reactions within yourself can save you future headaches and stress.

What is there that triggers you into a defensive position, and what do you do to keep yourself from taking out your anger/frustration/fear on those around you?

Peace and serenity,

Day 29 - Someone I want to tell everything to, but am too afraid to

Wow. Deep subject this one. Someone I want to tell all to, but am afraid to.
I think no matter who I pick, there is always going to be someone that I want to share everything to, but am too afraid. I don't like sharing everything, even when I want to, I don't really want to. I like keeping things to myself for the most part. I like the freedom that it has when I am feeling something but I'm the only one that knows it. It also makes it easier to explain some things to people, because you'll know that they have very limited background information.
So, I guess, without further ado:

@Bzilla Everything is so complicated with you two right now. Why can't you just suck it up and talk to each other?? I can't help you otherwise.

Dramatic people can't do anything for themselves, but they get mad if you try to help. Go figure.

Patience and peace,

Day 22 — Someone I want to give a second chance to

Wow, 8 days left. Or 8 tweets, since I'm getting really bad at posting every day.

I'm thinking that wanting to give a second chance to is probably someone that doesn't deserve it. I don't know anyone that I haven't given a second chance to that deserved it. I like to be fair, but I don't like to get screwed. It's not a preferred pastime of mine. It has happened too much in my life, and I do not and will not let it happen anymore.

On the other hand, maybe someone I'd like to give a second chance to can be someone that deserved a second chance, but that I don't speak to anymore (for whatever reason).

That makes it a little bit easier, since at least they would deserve the second chance, and I may be able to give it to them, if ever they happened upon this blog.

@Kelly I talk to your sister more than you. I try to get a hold of you and nothing. We were friends so long, and now you bail on my wedding and say nothing. What is going on?

Where to start? Any ideas?

So, in case no one has noticed, I love writing. I love expressing myself, and I love writing down and inventing new ideas. I haven't actually written a short story or a chapter since my ex (expletive) decided to erase my personal folder off the computer approximately 2 and a half years ago, deleting 3 short storys, about 100 poems, and a long novel type story that I had been working on for about 5-6 years.

Now, I'm feeling the writing bug infestation coming back, but I'm stuck with a where. Where do I start? I can't go back to my old style of writing, because I have changed too much. I am happy, and so I can't write the depressing, somber, mopey poems of olde. I have my days where I feel like crying all day, and laying in bed staring at the ceiling. But they are much more infrequent.

So where do I start? I have no ideas, no specific inspiration. I need someone to slap me (figuratively) with an idea. I need a muse, and I need one now!

Love stories get old, and that's most of what I can think of, so if any one of you who passes along here, please leave even just a random sentence (as nonsensical as you'd like!) and it will be used to try to inspire this bug.

Thanks to anyone who leaves a note, if you do, I will personally send you whatever I write with the inspiration you have given me.

Freezing apartment

So, all winter my apartment has been freezing. And I don't really have a big problem with this, because in theory it helped reduce emissions. However, I had the thermostat set at the max (like 30 degrees celcius) just to try to get some heat. There was literally no heat anywhere in the apartment except my bedroom. If we were watching TV, or doing anything sitting on the couch, we would be in sweatpants, tshirt, 2 hoodies, and covered in a fleece blanket.

This can't be natural. I complained a few times to the landlord, and got nothing. I'm surprised we couldn't see our breaths. I wouldn't have minded if it was actually 19-20 degrees, but I am positive it was less than that. Somedays it was
warmer outside than inside. That's not right.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure that I wasn't charged any extra heating for it, cuz my bill was less than I would have expected for the summer. I just wanted to vent.

Has anyone else had a bad experience with their apartment complexes heating, and what did you do about it?

Keeping hope alive

I'm trying to conceive a way to pitch a recycling system in place for the employee's of my job. I need to pitch it to my boss' boss in a way that he'll understand from a business perspective as helping the company not just the environment. Very frustrating. I've tried previously, which ended up with me being told that "We need to focus more on detail cleaning, and then we'll think about it."

I was like: EXCUSE ME? Cleaning dirt and corners and walls is more important that reducing the amount of crap going into landfills? What the %#@ are you thinking? But, of course, I wouldn't actually say that at the risk of losing my job. So instead I have been lying in wait, and plotting my next approach.

Hopefully it goes better.
