Hiatus due to Wedding

Just so everyone knows, I will be on a brief hiatus during my wedding/honeymoon week. I may post sporadically, but I make no guarantees. I'm sorry.

The 30 tweets challenge will resume upon regular posting.

Youtube, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

So, since I've had a lot affection for music videos, basically my whole life (spending HOURS watching MuchMusic back when they played music videos), you can imagine that that hasn't changed much.

I love music videos, I love finding the official video, and I like to see fanmade ones too. I love being able to find songs based on lyrics, and then verifying that it's the right song by listening to it.

In short, I love Youtube.

Not only can you find music videos (Galore!) but you can sometimes even find movies broken into 10 minute chunks, old TV shows, theme songs, funny shite, new stuff that hasn't been released as a single yet, and old music that hasn't been heard in 50 years.

This is currently my favourite song:

How about you? What's your favourite song to listen to right now? Do you enjoy finding the music video and seeing how it ties (or doesn't tie) into the actual song?

Love and serenity,

Simply Me

Day 17 of 30: Someone from my childhood

Now that I'm caught up, I can go on to today's tweet. Someone from my childhood. Does that mean someone that I don't talk to anymore that I was close to as a child? Or just someone that I've known since childhood? How ambiguous. Hm. Well, I'm going to go ahead and pick someone that I don't talk to much anymore, who was a very close friend all the way through elementary school.

@Twiggy You were always fun to be around, and I love running into you. Remember those valentines in grade 6? I was such a knob. :) Love ya girl.

Day 16 of 30: Someone that’s not in my province/country

Wow, so yesterday completely disappeared, and I neglected to post. Bad Laura.

Today's tweet goes to someone that isn't in my province(state)/country. This will be heading for my aunt, on my dad's side, who lives in the U.S. and travels around the world for her job. I only get to see her every 2-5 years, and I love her and her personality, style, views, free spirit, etc.

So, Aunty Jo, this tweet's for you!:

@AuntyJo I love that you have a job that allows you to travel, but I miss seeing you. Christmas isn't the same without you, and I can't wait to see u

Day 15 of 30: The person I miss the most

I guess, since it says it right in the title of this day's challenge, that this tweet has to be forwarded to a person. Hmm... Try to be original here, Laura, come on. No need to repeat people again. That's just lame.

Alright, so here we are, exactly halfway through the 30 day challenge, and I might be stuck. Sounds lame, but I'm thinking as I'm typing, I'm not much of a planner haha.

So, I will put forth... my old store manager, Drew.

This tweet's for you!

@WhosTheMan Great personalities spread joy and confidence, and that's what you did. You were definitely top 2 store managers, and I envy your employees.

Yes, that should do. He was as close of a friend as a boss and an employee can be, and I loved working for him. I still see him periodically, and we chat. But I do miss having him at work and keeping all the young upstarts under control (haha, that makes me sound SO OLD!)

Peace and joyfulness,

Simply Me

Saving the world during back to school? Why not?

Inspired by The EcoDiva's 16 green back to school tips, I am going to share the green back to school things I did this year for my daughter (who is starting grade 1 in September), as well as the things I plan to do throughout the school year.

Green things I did:
  • Bought pencils in bulk
  • Purchased a fabric pencil case, even though the list said to get a hard plastic one (no way!)
  • Only got one box of freezer bags, and will send them as needed, instead of blinding sending 2 full boxes as requested
  • Reusing previously purchased scissors/crayons/markers from her art collection and last year
  • Picked the paper duotangs instead of plastic
  • Got a paper 2-pocket folder, instead of plastic
  • Avoided purchasing a pack of pencils wrapped in plastic, in favour of a box slightly more expensive packaged in cardboard with no plastic window
  • Continuing to reuse her stainless steel water bottle, she loves it, it's covered in monkeys
Green things I wish I did:
  • Not bought pre-cut tennis balls (turns out it was a waste of money, and they're useless for anything aside from putting on chair legs)
  • Shopped around for PCRM** in her duotangs/folders/pencils/etc
  • Not done any shopping at Walmart (damn the convenience of that hated store!)
Green things I plan to do:
  • Look around for good deals on stationary and school supplies at all stores, including second hand stores
  • Check the internet for any deals at any of my favourite green shopping websites, and look for new favourites
  • When she needs clothes, head to the 2nd hand store up the street for clothes instead of Walmart/Childrens Place/etc
  • Repurpose her smaller clothes with long sleeves/pants that still fit around into t-shirts/tank tops and shorts (done once already this year)
  • Educate her on the perils and concerns with using hand sanitizer (especially since I'm sure the school has them ALL OVER THE PLACE!)
  • Keep talking to her about advertising, since she seems to be a royal sucker for TV ads ("you need to get Bounce dryer bars, they're the best! The TV said so!" Oysh, thankfully we are watching more movies lately)

How about you, other lovely people? If you have children, what things have to done to lessen the impact of the dreaded back to school shopping without busting either your wallet or the environment?

And those of you without kids, do you take advantage of back to school shopping season to stock up while the awesome sales are going on? Buy up your favourite clothes, stationary, backpacks, etc?

Any new ways of taking advantage of the sales that are out there are always appreciated and will be spread to friends and family.

Love and serenity,

Simply Me

Day 14 — Someone I’ve drifted away from

We're on day 14! Almost halfway through this challenge. It has been fun, hopefully everyone has enjoyed reading my mini-epiphanies.

Onwards to today's tweet, someone I've drifted away from.

There's a few people I've drifted away from, but more commonly it's them who have drifted. Having had my daughter at the end of grade 11, a lot of my then friends were still all into hanging out, partying, drinking, going out whenever they want, etc. You know, things that high school kids like doing. So it was a natural moving away that occurred.

That being said, I have moved away from my mom's cousin, Jen. She was my pseudo-big-sister for a while, many years, while she lived with my parents after she moved to my hometown. She has since moved about 4 hours away with her husband, and has 2 kids, with another on the way. I believe that I actually already tweeted to her...  Yep, I did, right here.

That's okay, it's my blog. I can tweet to who I want to. So I'm going to tweet her again.

@JennayBird I wish we lived closer, I miss our conversations and I miss helping you study. Your company and your opinions are always valuable to me.

Day 13 of 30: Someone I wish could forgive me

With 8 days til the wedding, things are getting a little stressed out around here! I think that everything is pretty much done, but every time I think that, something new comes up.

With that, today's tweet is to someone I wish could forgive me. Now, this one kind of goes with yesterday's post because it happens to be to my daughter.

@EmiBear You may not remember it, but I'm sorry. I'm sorry it happened, and I'm sorry I didnt notice it sooner. I hope you can forgive me, I love you

Some things in life are just hard to accept, and looking in the mirror only gets harder when my little girl does something or says something that reminds me of what happened to her. Nothing to severe, not like you hear about on TV. But bad enough for me. I wish every day that I had opened my eyes sooner, and left that *expletive* years before I did.

But the past is the past, and thankfully for the most part she seems to have recovered. She was top of her class in senior kindergarten, and I'm sure she'll be up there this school year. She is happy, smiling, intelligent (sometimes too much so). I love her dearly, and every day I pray and hope and wish that she turns out to be normal. So far so good.

Positivity and love spread across the globe,

Simply Me

Day 12 of 30: The person I hate the most/caused me a lot of pain

So I guess there's no way to be positive about this one. The person who caused me a lot of pain would be my most recent ex.

He treated our daughter like she was no one, neglected her and underfed her. I didn't know until after we split, and it haunts me to this day. It has been 2 years, and it still hurts to think about.

So here:

@FuckFace You ruined my life, and I have no respect for you. You are a waste of air, time, space, and life. You don't deserve anything you have.

Onwards to positivity, I am happy now and so is my daughter. She has been adopted by my fiancee, and she has been thriving since. We have lots of love and joy in our lives, and I wouldn't look back to change it for the world.

Love always,

Simply Me

Day 11 of 30: A deceased person I wish I could talk to

So, this one is super easy. My grandfather on my dad's side passed away less than a year before I was born. I've always heard that I'm a lot like him, and that he was a great guy. When I was in grade 9, I had a dream, and in it I came out to him about a lot of things (sexuality, spirituality) that I had never mentioned to any of my family. In my dream, he told me he loved me no matter what, and that he would always be watching over me.

Grandpa Art, this tweet's for you <3

@Grampa I feel that I know you though we've never met. I know that I love you, and I want to thank you for watching over me all my life. I miss you.

Who is there that isn't in your life anymore, or maybe was long gone before you were born, that you'd like to talk to? What would you say to them? What do you think they would say to you?

Love and compassion,

Simply Me

Day 10 of 30: Someone I don't talk to as much as I'd like

There's a fair few people I wish I talked to more. But most of all, I wish I talked with my first-cousin-once-removed, Jen. She was like a big sister to me growing up, and I love her very dearly. Her opinion counts a lot to me, maybe even more than it should. She lives quite a few hours away from me now, and is very busy with 2 young children and another on the way. I wish I could see her and talk to her more often.

So Jennay, this tweet's for you:

@JennayBird I miss you, every holiday that passes I wish you were here with me. You were and are an inspiration for me to aspire always more. I love you

7 different ways to use salt

So, like I said, I love finding fun new information on the internet.

Found on AboutMyPlanet.com, a list of new ways to use salt. Regular table salt.

Fantastic!

Check out the full list here.

I love that these tips and ideas are actually practical, and use an everyday household item.

Let me know if you have tried any of these, and how they work! I am interested in seeing different peoples opinions of these uses.

Lots of love,

Simply Me

Day 9 of 30: Someone I wish I could meet

Someone I wish I could meet. There's a whole lot of those. How can I possibly narrow it down? I guess I'll just pick one off the top of my head!

@Gandhi Your quotes inspire and I would love to speak with you to discuss life and everything within. You are the icon of serenity and peacefulness.

Who is your inspiration? Who do you wish you could meet, or talk to, or even just have a single 5 minute conversation with?

Lots of love,

Simply Me

I received a blog award!

Believe it or not, I received a blog award, straight from The Tsaritsa herself. Shout out, love your blog girl! Thanks for the award! I know I've been mentioning her a lot, but it's not my fault, I swear, she's just awesome. Everyone should check her out. Just saying :)

Anyways, the rules of blog awards, or something, state that I have to feed you guys 7 fun, unique, or at least somewhat interesting facts about myself. That you may or may not know. Sooo... here goes:

1. I am absolutely petrified of pretty much anything with more than 4 legs. So insects, spiders, scorpions, etc. All the tiny things in life. Snakes, however, with no legs, are not a problem. I love them.

2. I love animals, and would love to own a big house with lots of animals in it eventually. Kind of like a crazy cat lady, but not just cats. Want to keep my crazy options open. Maybe I'll be the crazy hampster lady?

3. Reading is something I've always loved, even though I read too fast and almost always have to read a book twice to understand it.

4. I'm a big nerd at heart, I love learning new things, playing on the computer, and playing video games.

5. Kind of a segway off the last one, I'm not an especially social person. I like spending time with people, I'm not a hermit or anything, but I really enjoy sitting down by myself and just relaxing, knitting, listening to music, watching tv, etc.

6. I have a 6 year old daughter, who is the cutest thing ever, that changed my life. I was 17 when I had her, and I wouldn't take it back. I love her very much, and I don't feel that I've missed out on anything because of her.

7. Last but not least, in case anyone hasn't picked up on it, I'm a lesbian. I'm getting married at the end of this month (August 31st!!) to the best, most wonderful, most supportive woman I've ever met.

Now, onto the 9 blogs I think deserve this award:

Rob Johnson from Rob's World
Annah from Red Means Go
Deanna Duke from Crunchy Chicken
Tamara from Quest for Happiness
Lisa from Condo Blues
Beth Terry from Fake Plastic Fish
Mark and Melanie from No New Plastic
PrettyPrincessXo from I wish I was a Disney Princess
Amanda Lynne from 20 Something and Loving It?

They all rock for different reasons, and you should totally check them all out.

Peace, love, and happiness to everyone

Simply Me

Wednesday's small step: Read an informative article

Today's small step: Read an informative article. Meaning, put down the video games, close up Facebook, turn off the iPod, and look up just ONE article regarding something you're interested in.

It can be related to sustainability, processing, factory conditions, organics, greenwashing, do-it-yourselfing, ingredients, etc.

ANYTHING that you want to know about. Just look up one.

My favourite websites for such informations are:

The Good Human
AboutMyPlanet
Big Green Purse

If you know of more, or want to add to my list (because I'm sure I've forgotten at least one that I peruse) please drop me a line, or leave a comment. I love hearing from you guys!

Also, send me links of your favourite informational articles, I absolutely love reading new things!

Lots of love,

Simply Me

Day 8 of 30: Favourite Internet Friend ... AND fun new ways to reuse old coffee grounds!

So today's Challenge Tweet is to be directed at a favourite internet friend. This may sound surprising, but I actually don't have many internet friends. I have people who's blog I follow, or people who I talk to primarily over the internet, but no one who I can honestly say that I met online and only (or primarily) talk to online. So I'm going to send this tweet out to Crunchy Chicken, who despite being a mother and wife, and having a job, manages to keep the rest of her viewers and readers entertained. Myself included.

@CrunchyChicken You are an inspiration and a fantastic person. You reach out to people you have never met, both to support them and be supported. You rock!

And for today, a fun little link for new ways to reuse coffee grounds!

We've all heard of throwing them in your compost, or sprinkling them in your garden to help keep pests away and fertilize them. Well, here at Simply Green, I am passing on a new list which piqued my interest.

Some of the fresh ideas are: skin exfolliant! (fabulous!) furniture scratch fix! (who doesn't need that when you have pets?) and deodorizer! (for your fridge, skin, shoes, anything!)

So if you like to reuse stuff, and love your coffee, click the photo caption above and read up on The Good Human's top 16 ways to reuse coffee grounds.

Lots of love, all,

Simply Me

Day 7 of 30: My ex-partner ... awkward

So today's challenge tweet goes to an ex. Like the Tsaritsa I don't much keep in close contact with my exes. Particularly the ones I would have the most to say to. I don't like negativity, and I prefer to keep people around me that make me feel good, either about myself or the world in general.

And so, this tweet will not go to a bad ex, as that just spreads negativity and bad feelings, but instead towards one that I was close friends with and have since lost contact with over the years.

@MRobert You always were a great guy, full of smiles despite the world. I hope wherever you are, you're still smiling. Spread your joy and love.

Day 6 of 30 - A Stranger... and A Dream??

So today's tweet goes to a stranger. What is that supposed to mean? Haha, guess this is where creativity and imagination comes in.

@Stranger I have never met you, and I may never meet you, but you are beautiful and worthy of love. As long as you keep smiling, I will smile back

Also, ironic due to yesterday's challenge tweet, I had a dream. It was more like a scene from a horror movie.

I was a girl, not quite like myself, but similar. Standing in a downtown type area, with construction supports and scaffolding all around. There was a man next to me, he was a co-worker. I believe I was a construction worker, as was he. We were discussing lunch breaks, as he usually went before me, but I was super hungry or something so wanted to go first. He didn't seem impressed, but let me go first anyways, parting with a "oh, okay, whatever". I walked away, through the downtown area, searching for a store. Which store, I'm not sure. I get to what looks like an open warehouse/garage type building, and see someone inside that I recognize. So I go inside. But she's talking to someone else, and just as I get to about 6 feet away, I hear in a man's voice "oh, okay, whatever" It was my coworker. Instantly frightened and unnerved, I start walking away. Then he sees me, and starts chasing me with a knife. Looks like a sharp one. I run, as fast as I can (which isn't too fast apparently) and he catches up and stabs me many times in the back. I'm crying, bleeding, and somehow I manage to get up and run towards the building and towards the girl that I knew. Then, view from above the situation, the guy stops dead, takes a stance, and throws the knife right towards me. It hits me right in the lower spine, and I fall, feeling a dull ache where the knife hit, feeling the blood drain out.

I wake up. My back still feels odd where the knife hit me in the dream. I kept my eyes open for a while, trying to push the fear and worry out of my head so I can fall back asleep.

What the heck was that all about? I don't understand.

Day 5 of 30: My dreams

So, I have to write a tweet to my dreams. That's kind of challenging, seeing as I rarely remember my dreams. It's almost as if I just fall asleep, then wake up, with no recollection of anything. Apart from apparently talking in my sleep, I have no proof that I do dream.

So here goes:

@MyLackOfDreams I wish I could remember you, but you evade me each night. Please stop doing that, as I'd like to know what I think while I'm sleeping. Thanks

Anyone else wanting to try this challenge? It's kind of fun, makes you think, since you have to put all your thoughts on the subject into a single 140 characters. Of course, you can always change it up and make your own rules.

Let me know if anyone reading this starts this challenge thanks to me and the link I provided here which links back to here

Lots of love to all

Day 4 of 30 - My sibling AND wedding update

@Phil Despite the fact that you don't try to push yourself forward in life, I hope you can find your goal, and become all you should be.

My brother is a strange person. He is incredibly gifted and intelligent, but in that lays overconfidence and know-it-all-ism. He doesn't always accept that his way is not always the best, but he is usually there for me. We have had many disagreements, and many months where we did not speak. But he is my brother, and I do love him dearly. I only hope that he reaches for the dreams that he has, and I know that he will attain them.

In other news:

Just finishing up the sample procession for the wedding (which is in like less that 3 weeks!) and putting everything in order. My brain is mush. There is so much left to do, but it's all little details. I wish I had known how much was left, before now! Then I wouldn't be in crunch time! Bah!

Also, I'm handmaking my place cards. Did not want to pay for someone to do something that I can do. So I'm stamping cardstock with pink and blue letters. Good fun.

Day 3 of 30 - My Parents

@Mom&Dad I love you both so much, you've always been there for me. Despite our differences,  I know you're always there for me.

Of course, that could never express everything that I feel for my parents, how much I appreciate them, how bad I feel for what a jerk I was growing up. But at least it's a start.

Greenwashing really is smoke and mirrors. Mostly smoke in this case.

Now here is something I never expected, but kind of did at the same time.

Are you ready?

Eco-Friendly Cigarettes!!!

Wait, what?

No joke, look HERE for The Good Human's most recent Greenwash of the Week.

Wow. Just wow.

Day 2 of 30 Tweets - My Crush

Well this one will be a smidge of an issue, seeing as my best friend is my fiancee who is also my big crush! Haha, go figure. Alright, let me be somewhat creative. My crush can be whoever I really like based on whatever qualifiers I choose, so I'm going to go with Johnny Cash.

For he is a strong powerful and influential individual who was not afraid to instill change in the world.

He was not afraid to stand out, and he created beautiful imagery with his music

So, Mr. Cash, this tweet's for you:

@JohnnyCash Your music inspires me, and I love your fashion sense. I love that you create your own look without caring what others think. RIP Sept 2003

30 Tweets for 30 Peeps Challenge - Day 1

So, I found this 'list' of 'tweets' on this BLOG as a personal challenge to herself. I was intrigued. It seemed like a great way to express yourself, not only to others, but to yourself. And it can be incredibly freeing to let these feelings/emotions/thoughts out into the world wide web. So here goes. I don't have many real people that I've met on my Twitter list, so most of the names will be fake. Just a warning.

So here's the list of 'tweets' I have to write. Conciseify (I know it's not a real word haha) my feelings into 140 characters. Scroll down for my tweet.

Monday Musing: Happy thoughts

Sometime this past weekend, the issue of labeling others as "gay-haters" (in this particular incident) simply because they did not do what was wanted of them came across to me as it's own form of discrimination. How can people of a minority (gays, coloured people, blind/deaf, etc) base the opinions of others on something so small? How can one say that they don't treat everyone like that, and the person of minority is assuming that it's simply with them that there is a problem?

Discrimination takes many forms, you need to think positively to affect positive change. If you automatically assume that whoever has done you a wrong is discriminating against you, then you are discriminating against yourself, because it means that you feel that something about you is worthy of being treated as less.

Take charge, tell yourself that there is nothing wrong with you. Because there isn't. You are all beautiful, wonderful, perfectly unique people. And people are not all the same. So rejoice in your differences, for they make you, you.

Peace and love,

Simply Me

Movie Day: Shark Tale

So I've decided to keep track occasionally of what movies I've watched recently and my opinion of them. Nothing regular yet, but we'll see where this takes me.

So first on the movie block, a movie I watched just last night with my daughter and fiancee.

Shark Tale!
Starring such famous voices as Will Smith, Angelina Jolie, Robert DeNiro, and many more.

I started out watching this movie, thinking it would be along the lines of The Reef and Finding Nemo but was pleasantly surprised.

The main little fish, Oscar (voiced by Will Smith) is a cleaner at the local Whale Wash and he accidentally happens across the body of the son of the Boss Big White Shark, Don Lino (Robert DeNiro) who is a sort of mafia-godfather type character.

Being a nobody, Oscar makes it look like he killed the shark, to give himself a name and a presence, so that he can feel important.

He befriends the outcasted great white Lenny (Jack Black) who was kicked out of the "shark mafia family" due to his being a vegetarian, and only eating kelp. Lenny disguises himself as a dolphin and stays with Oscar and his friend Angie (Renee Zellweger). Turns out, Angie is in love with Oscar, but doesn't like his new fame and what he does with it.

In the end, the truth about the shark's death comes out, Angie and Oscar hook up, and Lenny is re-accepted by his father. Along with quite a few other little plot twists and funny moments.

All in all, a great movie that was pleasingly but not boringly simple, and fun to watch. Very cute and good plot. Shows that fame and money aren't everything, sometimes all you really want and need is what is right in front of you.

My camping experience

So, like I said, I hadn't been camping in somewhere around 10 years. But this weekend was AMAZING! I loved it, the freedom, the fresh air, the lack of time constraints. It was just wonderful.

Now, for my first picture heavy post, here are some shots of the drive up to the campsite:

Driving in the countryside
It's so  beautiful
On both sides :)
Believe it or not, we're going around 80-90kph, and this is with a camera phone
As you can see by the occasionally blurry spots
But some are super clear :)
So much green! Love it!

And some shots of the campsite and the river, which had some GORGEOUS rapids right next to our site. It was fantastic:

Red flowers by the river
Purple flowers on rocks in the middle of the river
Red flowers on the other side of the river
The tiny silver speck on that rock is a pretty little dragonfly, who (with his many kin) kept me mostly safe from those evil deerflies :)
One of the many frogs I saw
Just chillin in the river, keeping an eye
One of the rapids, with a little bit of sea foam
More purple flowers, so pretty
Decent shot of the rapids
Closer shot of the rapids
Looking down the river from the middle of the rocks
Sitting in these rapids was like sitting in a jacuzzi that only blows one way, soo cool
Calm river shot as the sun begins to set
Shot down the other way from the rapids as the sun sets

And our glorious campfire that kept us warm and relatively bug free, unfortunately these shots are all after the sun has set, so they don't quite embody the awesome that was the fire:

All in all, had a fantastic time, swimming in the lake, up and down the river. I can't wait to do it again!
