Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

Disclaimer: This is a rant, and it will be very opinionated. If you disagree, I respect that. But don't disrespect me by saying my opinion isn't valid, or I will be forced to delete your comment. If you agree, fantastic, I respect that too. Much love.

I will begin by saying it straight out: I am not Christian. I do not believe in Jesus. If you do, good for you and I hope that your faith will get you through the harder times in life. But I am not you. I consider myself a spiritual agnostic. Don't try to search it or look it up on Wikipedia. I made it up, and it covers my beliefs pretty well.

Note: apparently others have thought of it, though their concept of spiritual agnosticism is different than my own

However, I do celebrate Christmas. I love Christmas. It is, without contest, my favourite holiday. It's not the gifts, or the spending money, or the unwrapping of whatever interesting or unique knick-knacks I may receive. It's not even Santa Claus, elves, and all the other fairy tale stuff that makes it magical. It's the family time.

Every Christmas, I spend the day with my parents. Every year, even when I was not living with them, on December the 25th, I would go over to their house and spend the day there. Sometimes my paternal grandmother would be there, sometimes not. Sometimes my aunt on my dad's side would be there, sometimes not. But my parents were ALWAYS there.

Every Boxing Day, I spend the day with my extended family on my mom's side. All 23-or-so of us cram ourselves into whichever house is volunteered for it and spend the day together. We open gifts, we talk amongst each other, we eat. If I didn't go one year, I'm pretty sure my maternal grandmother would whoop my ass, and I would stand there and take it.

But lately, as many of you may have heard, it is no longer 'correct' to say Merry Christmas. Because god help us if we say Merry Christmas to someone of the Jewish, Islamic, Pagan, etc faith. It's an attack on their faith.

I'm sorry, but if I celebrate Christmas, I will be saying Merry Christmas. If I celebrated Hannukah, or Kwanzaa, or Yule, I would expect that people would not be offended by wishing them a joyous Hannukah, or Kwanzaa, or Yule. If you get offended by people who say Merry Christmas, you are insecure in your own faith.

Getting offended at someone wishing you a happy holiday that you do not celebrate is like getting offended when someone asks you if someone of the same gender (if you're straight) or different gender (if you're gay) is attractive. If you can't say that someone else is attractive without being uncomfortable and offended, then you are not secure in your sexuality. Just admit it.

I will say it again, I am not Christian. I celebrate Christmas for what it means to me. I am also gay, but I can tell others that I find men attractive, even if I would never attempt to bed or try to attract one. I am secure in my faith and spirituality as I am secure in my sexuality.

If you say Happy Hannukah to me, I will assume that it is your religion and your holiday that you are following, and I will say Happy Hannukah back to you. Because I respect your choice in religion and holiday.

If you say Happy Kwanzaa to me, I will assume that it is your religion and your holiday that you are following, and I will say Happy Kwanzaa back to you. Because I respect your choice in religion and holiday.

If I say Merry Christmas to you, just say it back. Or reply with the holiday of your personal choice. (example: I say "Merry Christmas" you reply "Happy Hannukah" back. It's not challenging.) I am wishing you well in the festive season and holiday of my choice, and trying to show a level of respect in myself. If you don't respect my choice, then don't say anything back. Don't be snarky, that's just disrespectful and rude.

Saying Happy Holidays, however 'all encompassing' is insulting to me.
  1. First of all, you are releasing your own conviction and system of beliefs for fear of insulting or offending people. No matter what you do in life, people will be offended at it. There's nothing you can do about it. Just be yourself and those who respect truth and honesty with come to you.
  2. Secondly, most people don't celebrate "holidays" they celebrate Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/Yule/etc. Generalizing is discrimination and prejudice. If you don't believe it, start generalizing about a group of people and see if they appreciate it.
  3. Thirdly, and finally, most of the 'holiday season' holidays do not overlap. Occasionally they do, but for the most part they are stand-alone. (example: Hannukah started on December 1 and ended December 9, Kwanzaa December 26 til January 1, Yule December 21 in the northern hemisphere and June 21 in the southern hemisphere.) Not even close!
Also, the song is "We wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year." Do you want to change a Christmas carol to "We wish you a Happy Holidays and a happy New Year"? I'd be pretty peeved personally.

It is a holiday season, but my holiday is Christmas. If you want me to respect your choices and your beliefs, then show some to me. Because I have nothing against other religions or holidays. Just because they are not my choice does not make them invalid to me.

Open your heart and accept the love that people are trying to share with you.

Sleep... or something like it

Sleep is hard to come by right now. I'm not sure why, but no matter how much sleep I get it just isn't satisfying enough. I'm constantly tired. It probably has something to do with the distinct increase in my coffee consumption, but it's just so darn tasty!

The strange thing is I fall asleep very quickly at night. Like, within 5-10 minutes. But I always wake up wanting more sleep. My body is used to waking up at 5am now, which is great because that's when I get up. Unfortunately my mind is still comatose at this point.

I'm trying to figure out how to make it easier to stay awake and coherent in the mornings, because I could be so much more productive in the morning. I could do more writing, do some yoga, make healthier lunches, the list goes on. I just can't think of anything that will help my mind wake up when my body does.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I actually can't sleep in past 8am, not even on weekends. Not even if I stay awake until past midnight. I am an anomaly, I think. I hope not.

The change in seasons seems to be what is exacerbating it, but I'm not sure on how to go about rectifying this. I don't have a dawn simulator (but I want one!) and I don't know any other ways to convince your mind it's time to wake up.

Chamomile tea is delicious, unfortunately it doesn't make me sleepy. So I look forward to hearing some insight and tips, because I am pretty much at a loss and getting more and more incoherent as the days go by.

What do you do when you find that your sleep just isn't cutting it? Care to share some tips? I've read countless "top five tips for better sleep" and "natural remedies for insomnia" articles, and I just can't seem to find anything that actually works.

Ebb and flow - Emotions that are not under control

When you feel unable to focus on the things right in front of you, what do you do? I have been suffering this question a lot lately. I have this overwhelming feeling of hopelessness that just doesn't go away for longer than a few days. I feel lost and confused at my own thoughts and emotions, and don't have a starting point to go by to start stepping out of this.

I feel isolated despite being around many people throughout the day. I know that most of them even care about me to an extent. Processing negative emotions has always been a challenge for me, and I think the main reason I recede into isolation and hopelessness is because I'm avoiding these negative emotions.

I need to find a way to express myself, but don't know where to start.

Things starting feeling habit and routine, and I start to crave spontaneity despite the recklessness that I know it brings.

I lose the will to eat, or I find myself eating too much.

I lose the will to read, or I find myself reading more than paying attention to my wife and daughter.

I lose the will to knit/crochet, or I find myself burying into it as an escape from what's around me.

The worst of it is, I don't realize that I'm doing it until those around me have been hurt and pushed away by my actions.

Baby steps is the way to go, but I don't know which baby steps to start with.

Any advice?

Happy Halloween!!

Halloween to me is a day to dress up in something you wouldn't normally wear. Now, I don't take it to the degree, and dress like a hooker or anything. I'll just throw together a really off the wall outfit.

It's fun, and it doesn't cost me anything because I just use whatever I already have in unusual combinations.

My daughter this year is going as a bride. She is wearing her flower girl dress (which was white or off-white, not sure which) and my veil from when I got married in August and a bundle of pink plastic flowers I got as a Christmas gift from her two years ago.

So cute! I can't wait to post a picture of it.

What are you doing for Halloween? Do you dress up? Do you go out, or do you stay in? Tell me all your gorey secrets (pun intentional).

Link sharing time!

Here are some links I've found over the past week or so that have peaked my interest and I would like to share.

76 Dangers of Sugar - Dr. Mercola uses some big words, but puts it pretty simply despite the large list and long article. Very informational, and all concise.

"I Could Never Give Up..." - Leo put it straight forward and true. Saying you could never just means that you aren't ready to embrace alternatives. Really makes you think.

Stuff No One Told Me - 52 - Straight forward and true.

Digging for Savings - This is different from any secondhand store I've ever seen, and I wish we had outlet's like this where I live!

Waste Free School Lunches - Week One - I like how all the stuff matches and it can be suited to each child.

Compassionate Parenting - Yes it's a subscription website, and they don't spam. They only send their tips, and I have been receiving them for almost 2 weeks now. It's just a quick nice reminder of things to think about when speaking to your child (or anyone, for that matter)

That's all for now.

If you come across any links that you'd like to share, or want me to feature one of your site's posts/articles, send me an e-mail.

Sugar free trial

I've done it before, and I'm doing it again.

Going sugar free. Initial goal is one week. Seven days. Not so terrifying.

The rules: (remember, these are my rules, so if you want to do this yourself, feel free to use your own rules)
-No refined sugar, which means, no sugar in my tea/coffee, no brown sugar on my oatmeal, no sugar in my muffins, etc
-No artificial sweeteners, no Splenda, no aspartame, nothing
-Allowed: natural sugars, such as those in fruits and vegetables.

Started this on Tuesday, but had some bread which had sugar in it, so official start date was Wednesday October 20th.

Why am I doing this? It's a test, a trial so to speak. It makes me have to remember to check labels of foods, and pushes me more towards raw, whole, real foods.

Also, sugar depresses the immune system, it's addictive, along with countless other issues

It's eye opening, and it's inspiring. I love the feeling. I haven't gotten any withdrawal symptoms, which is surprising. But we'll see.

Once I make it to a week, maybe I'll continue and make it to a month.

(Sidenote: I've also stopped eating meat, and significantly cut down my dairy and egg consumption.)

Have you ever tried something new, just temporarily, to see if you could do it and how you would feel?

Do you think I'm crazy and out of my mind for trying something like this?

Friday Fluff!

Every now and then, life needs a little fluff. Something extra, something soft. Something that reminds you of happy things, or that makes you just smile.

Today, I'm going to share the lyrics for one of my favourite songs.

Adam Lambert - Time For Miracles

It's late at night and I can't sleep
Missing you just runs too deep
Oh I can't breathe
Thinking of your smile

Every kiss I can't forget
This aching heart ain't broken yet
Oh god I wish I could make you see
Cause I know this flame isn't dying
So nothing can stop me from trying

Baby you know that
Maybe it's time for miracles
Cause I ain't giving up on love
You know that
Maybe it's time for miracles
Cause I ain't giving up on love
No I ain't giving up on us

I just wanna be with you
Cause living is so hard to do
When all I know
In trapped inside you eyes

The future I cannot forget
This aching heart ain't broken yet
Oh god I wishI could make you see
Cause I know this flame isn't dying
So nothing can stop me from trying

Baby you know that
Maybe it's time for miracles
Cause I ain't giving up on love
You know that
Maybe it's time for miracles
Cause I ain't giving up on love
No I ain't giving up on us

Baby can you feel it coming
You know I can hear it
Hear all the souls
Baby can you feel me feel you

Baby you know that
Maybe it's time for miracles
Cause I ain't giving up on love
You know that
Maybe it's time for miracles
Cause I ain't giving up on love

I love this song.

What's your favourite song?

Outlook on outlooks

Despite changes in life, some things maintain a level of continuity. They are things that one can always depend on to remain the same. Eaach person needs to identify such things in their lives and determine how they can benefit from these things.

A single positive (or negative) childhood memory of a small item or situation can have serious and huge effects on how someone will react or treat that item or situation.

The routine of your family sitting together by a big window and watching the lightning during thunderstorms will create a different emotional response in your adult self than the routine of hiding in individual rooms, bedrooms or the basement, and trying to shelter yourself from the thunder. One with warm family memories will enjoy the sight and sound of the storm. Where one with solitary, fearful memories will feel anxious and panic  and try to hide. Both are unique reactions to a consistent occurence.

There will always be thunderstorms in life, be they literal or emotional. Each persons reaction will be different. Don't think of why someone is different than you, think instead of what lead you to your own reaction, and what may have led them to theirs.

Seek to understand, only then can you accept. Trying to change the way someone feels rarely, if ever, ends successfully. If you try to understand the reasoning behind your own reactions, and theirs, instead, cooperation is more easily accomplished. Then a middle ground can be found, if necessary.

Day 26 — the last person you made a pinky promise to

Pinky promises... Memories of childhood friendships and giggles come to mind. Pinky promises aren't something that people do too often at this age (ripe old age of 23) but it does happen periodically.

The significance of the pinky promise is this: It is a promise so deeply meant, that both parties agree to it prior to the pinky shake, and that it cannot be nullified by crossed fingers and cannot be broken. Initially, the intention was that if one party broke the promise, they would get their pinky finger cut off, as a repercussion. Society nowadays, as a whole, is not so violent. But one who breaks a pinky swear is regarded as a shameful person, in general.

I can't remember the last time I made a pinky promise. Lame, I know. I lost most of my short term memory some years ago, and as a result can't remember most of my elementary school days. It sucks, sometimes. But maybe it's a good thing. Means more space for memories of what's happening now.

Anyways, since I can't remember, I can't really tweet. I just really want to impress the importance of a pinky swear. I truly believe that a pinky swear is for real, and if you really mean it, then do it. Promises shouldn't need a pinky swear to be held true, just stay true to your word. Everything else will fall into place.

Honesty and fidelity, always,

Simply Me

Day 24 — The person that gave me my favorite memory AND energy news

Well, favourite memory... This is going to get repetitive!! My favourite memory is of my wedding day! Haha, how lame am I, it was just 3 weeks ago (TODAY!! lol) and it's still my favourite, of all others.

Anywho, the person who gave me my favourite memory, obviously, would be my wife.

Yes, again. I know, she comes up a lot. Well, she is important!! Hehe

@WifeyLove You gave me the best day I ever could have asked for, and not only was it perfect... it was perfect! Love you forever and always

Anyways, enough sappy crap, you must be getting tired of this.

I have other news. Since our current provincial government is changing the rates and system for hydro and gas billing (as in, based on peak hours, not a flat rate of an average for the day) we were visited by the JustEnergy fairy, and got to sign a contract to keep a flat rate billing system.

The upside to this, aside from having a flat rate, is that I got the option to choose whether my energy was sourced from "brown" energy sources (oil, coal, etc), 60% green energy, or 100% green energy (for a slight increase in rate). Not only did I pick 100% (of course) but the location of the energy farms (wind, water, solar) is all in Canada! How awesome. Local energy, hehe. Not sure if that's normal, but I was happy about it.

So that's my ramble, maybe not so exciting but I felt like sharing it nonetheless.

Where to start? Any ideas?

So, in case no one has noticed, I love writing. I love expressing myself, and I love writing down and inventing new ideas. I haven't actually written a short story or a chapter since my ex (expletive) decided to erase my personal folder off the computer approximately 2 and a half years ago, deleting 3 short storys, about 100 poems, and a long novel type story that I had been working on for about 5-6 years.

Now, I'm feeling the writing bug infestation coming back, but I'm stuck with a where. Where do I start? I can't go back to my old style of writing, because I have changed too much. I am happy, and so I can't write the depressing, somber, mopey poems of olde. I have my days where I feel like crying all day, and laying in bed staring at the ceiling. But they are much more infrequent.

So where do I start? I have no ideas, no specific inspiration. I need someone to slap me (figuratively) with an idea. I need a muse, and I need one now!

Love stories get old, and that's most of what I can think of, so if any one of you who passes along here, please leave even just a random sentence (as nonsensical as you'd like!) and it will be used to try to inspire this bug.

Thanks to anyone who leaves a note, if you do, I will personally send you whatever I write with the inspiration you have given me.

Love and serenity,

I received a blog award!

Believe it or not, I received a blog award, straight from The Tsaritsa herself. Shout out, love your blog girl! Thanks for the award! I know I've been mentioning her a lot, but it's not my fault, I swear, she's just awesome. Everyone should check her out. Just saying :)

Anyways, the rules of blog awards, or something, state that I have to feed you guys 7 fun, unique, or at least somewhat interesting facts about myself. That you may or may not know. Sooo... here goes:

1. I am absolutely petrified of pretty much anything with more than 4 legs. So insects, spiders, scorpions, etc. All the tiny things in life. Snakes, however, with no legs, are not a problem. I love them.

2. I love animals, and would love to own a big house with lots of animals in it eventually. Kind of like a crazy cat lady, but not just cats. Want to keep my crazy options open. Maybe I'll be the crazy hampster lady?

3. Reading is something I've always loved, even though I read too fast and almost always have to read a book twice to understand it.

4. I'm a big nerd at heart, I love learning new things, playing on the computer, and playing video games.

5. Kind of a segway off the last one, I'm not an especially social person. I like spending time with people, I'm not a hermit or anything, but I really enjoy sitting down by myself and just relaxing, knitting, listening to music, watching tv, etc.

6. I have a 6 year old daughter, who is the cutest thing ever, that changed my life. I was 17 when I had her, and I wouldn't take it back. I love her very much, and I don't feel that I've missed out on anything because of her.

7. Last but not least, in case anyone hasn't picked up on it, I'm a lesbian. I'm getting married at the end of this month (August 31st!!) to the best, most wonderful, most supportive woman I've ever met.

Now, onto the 9 blogs I think deserve this award:

Rob Johnson from Rob's World
Annah from Red Means Go
Deanna Duke from Crunchy Chicken
Tamara from Quest for Happiness
Lisa from Condo Blues
Beth Terry from Fake Plastic Fish
Mark and Melanie from No New Plastic
PrettyPrincessXo from I wish I was a Disney Princess
Amanda Lynne from 20 Something and Loving It?

They all rock for different reasons, and you should totally check them all out.

Peace, love, and happiness to everyone

Monday Musing: Happy thoughts

Sometime this past weekend, the issue of labeling others as "gay-haters" (in this particular incident) simply because they did not do what was wanted of them came across to me as it's own form of discrimination. How can people of a minority (gays, coloured people, blind/deaf, etc) base the opinions of others on something so small? How can one say that they don't treat everyone like that, and the person of minority is assuming that it's simply with them that there is a problem?

Discrimination takes many forms, you need to think positively to affect positive change. If you automatically assume that whoever has done you a wrong is discriminating against you, then you are discriminating against yourself, because it means that you feel that something about you is worthy of being treated as less.

Take charge, tell yourself that there is nothing wrong with you. Because there isn't. You are all beautiful, wonderful, perfectly unique people. And people are not all the same. So rejoice in your differences, for they make you, you.

Peace and love,

Simply Me

Pain so immense that words do not describe
Shifting from one plane to another
Thoughts transfer and are reinterpreted
What once was happy, no longer
What once caused pain, no longer
Each new feeling is not new
Just rethought and rebranded
Whatever
Nothing can ever change the changes
They are stuck within forever

Personal revisitation of yoga

The child, Emily, was home sick today, so I also stayed home from work. She has some sort of stomach flu, and it is likely due to the fact that she doesn't let herself sleep.

This aside, I took time today while she was sleeping to revisit yoga. I had tried it many years ago, and could not slow myself down enough to enjoy it. Now that I have matured and begun paying attention to the pace I live my life at, I am able to step back and enjoy this simple activity of self-actualization. I thoroughly enjoyed attuning myself with, well, myself.

I watched and participated in Intimate Yoga (which played on channel 20 at around 12:30pm on my Rogers cable). Then took a few hours to do other stuff, talk to Emily, do some crocheting. I then decided I wanted more. So I took out my age old VHS tape called "gentle yoga for beginners with Suzanne Deason"

Also gave me a chance to actually use my exercise mat, which has been sitting, rolled up, in the corner for a few months now.

I definitely recommend yoga to anyone who wants or needs to take time out of their day to reassess themselves and to realign their energy.

Yoga tapes and DVD's can be found cheap at secondhand stores, and at the library. There is also tonnes upon tonnes of yoga videos and tips online such as HERE or HERE. Of course, a simple Google search will help you find exactly what you're looking for.

How about you? Any of you already do yoga? Have some favourite types or preferred poses? Have questions about the different types? Let your thoughts out here.

Computerlessness breeds innovation... or something

Well, as of today, I can say that I have been without home internet, or even a computer, for 2 weeks. The only time I get on the net is on my Wednesday job, where I man a desk. It was hard at first, being without my computer. You become accustomed to having it there, and it becomes part of your routine. I would spend 2-3 hours on the computer each day, and doing what? Mostly playing games on Facebook. Seems ridiculous now. In light of this, I am currently removing all games from Facebook.

Family Bonuses:
In these two weeks, however, I have been spending more face time with my daughter, and my fiancee. The television is sometimes on, but it's less attention sucking than the computer ever was. Emily (my daughter) has loved the extra attention she's been getting, and she is getting much more confident with reading to me. Mel has also been enjoying it. Since I have some measure of mood disorder, the computer was an easy way for me to subconsciously recede into my own mind. Since there's no computer, I am staying more alert and more "in the now" than ever.

Personal Bonuses:
I have also been spending more time focusing on my own personal artsy type projects. I actually managed to complete a card for my mother for mother's day, complete with little cutouts of a flower, and a heart. I also started a new knitting project, which I am hoping will turn out nicely. Emily has also taken a liking to this new attention focus, as just this morning she asked if I was going to do any knitting before taking her to daycare.

In Conclusion:
So, in my 15 odd years as an avid computer and internet addict, I can say with all honesty that I now know what life is like without a computer. And it's not that bad. I do still need my occasional touch with the e-universe, but it's not a daily necessity. I think that when the computer is back up and running, I will see it more as an asset than a personal need for day to day life. If this computerlessness remains, I will definitely need to dig out the old library card for some good old fashioned research using books. Hopefully it won't NEED to get to that point, but maybe a trip to the library would be a good idea.

Anyone else have any epiphanies while I've been offline? Let me know :)

Random ramblings

Sometimes, there are days that you just want to lay in bed all day and pretend that the day never happened. As a mother, it is never possible to do this. I push myself each morning to get up, and to get my daughter ready for her day, and it is sometimes the hardest thing that I can do. I really wish we could just stay home and spend that time together.

I just needed to get this off my chest. Sometimes days are hard to push through, but they are rewarding in the end. I love my daughter, I love my partner, and I love going through life with the both of them. They are my reason for getting up and doing something with each day.
