Getting organized your way

Ever feel that you are responsible for more things than you have time for? Or that no matter how often you try, you can never find what you're looking for in a normal amount of time? These things are but a few symptoms of a problem that is more widespread that can even be imagined.

Being disorganized is a very common problem, and it is very hard to find a method or system that can organize you. This is because no matter how many experts help you, or how many different methods or organization you try, the fact is that each and every person needs something different to organize their lives.

Personally, I have tried many different methods, and I'm still working on finding the exact solution that works for me. But in continuing to search for and find things that put me closer to being organized, I have come to collect little bits and pieces of various methods. I don't fit into an organizational cookie cutter, and neither will you.

Instead, try different things and keep in mind that just because the whole system may not work for you, a portion of it probably will. Conglomerate a variety of tricks from a range of organizational systems and you will find a perfectly unique system that works perfectly for your life. Don't try to force yourself to fit into a process that does not match your life.

Although I cannot offer a fix-all system for organizing your life, I can provide a few tips on how to start your search for your one perfect mix of systems.

First off, determine why you want to be organized. Is it to find things more easily? Is it to keep track of your goals? Whatever your reason, it is important. You do not need to share your reason with anyone, it's purely for yourself. This is the one thing that will help keep you motivated to keep going, regardless of how many setbacks you may experience.

Secondly, figure out if you are a list-based person or a full-sentence based person. Creating lists seems like a great way to organize yourself, until you want to put in a whole paragraph to explain what needs to be done. There is nothing wrong with wanting to write out specifics, don't beat yourself up over it if you do. Are you perhaps somewhere in between? Try not to confine yourself to the realm of to-do lists. Branch out and decide on how you want to set yourself up for success.

Finally, remember that your idea of organization will be different from others around you. One person may find organization in labeled files and coloured boxes. Another may find piles of relevant and related material all put together is organized. The possibilities are endless. Open your mind and allow your thoughts to lead the way, because they will show you the way to how to sort out and organize your life, your thoughts, and your dreams. Then take the steps to make it happen.

Personal health tips to avoid the flu

With flu season beginning to bear it's ugly head, and myself just getting over a nasty cold, I figured I would share my thoughts on germophobia.

Keep in mind, these are my personal views, and if you don't like them, that's fine.

1. Hand sanitizer is a waste of money. It's cold, feels gross on your hands, makes you smell like a booze-hound, and is overall bad for you immune system.

Why? Because your body needs to maintain a certain number of bacteria to balance it's own system, and to keep your immune system in check. Using hand sanitizer just kills off all the bacteria, making your system start fresh. With consistent use, it also tells your body that it doesn't need to create those anti-bacterical systems, and lowers your own personal immune system. Just wash your hands regularly with plain soap (not that antibacterial junk).

2. Keep warm. I know, technically you don't get sick by being cold. But it certainly doesn't make you feel any better! Throw on an extra layer, and your body will thank you. Plus, you'll exert less energy shaking/shivering, and won't lose hydration so quickly.

3. Drink your liquids!!! This has to be the worst thing that people don't do when they're feeling ill. They stop drinking. Worst thing. Ever. Keeping yourself hydrated will make your body continuously flush out all the nasty crap in your system, keeps the good bacteria where they are, and keeps your kidneys and other organs happy. So just drink something.

4. Get your rest where you can. If your body isn't rested, it can't fight off bacteria or other infections. Try to squeeze in at least 7 hours a night, preferably undisturbed. If you're having trouble sleeping, try avoiding caffeine and sugar after 7pm (or approximately 2-3 hours before you're heading to bed) and don't drink too much before bed.

These are just the basics, the commandments, that I follow pretty much year round. Just remember, if you treat your body well, it's more likely to treat you well in return. Give it what it needs, and it will work harder for you.

Wednesday's small step: New pastimes

Passing the time, beating boredom, is one of the easiest ways to fall into a trap. A trap where you feel like all you can do is sit on the couch, watch garbage TV, and eat junk food. You fall into the cycle, because you're tired, because you're lazy, but you're also bored.

One thing I've found, boredom can be beaten with minimal effort. Television, computer, or any type of technology is, is not needed for breaking through inertia. All you need to do is think a little bit outside of the box. Remember things that you liked doing when you were younger.

Me, personally, I love being artsy, being creative, and spending time outside. So my 'new' pastimes include knitting (right now, working on a curly scarf kind of like this one) or crocheting (which I'm not so good at, haha). I also enjoy thinking of new ways to use things that I have around the house. Such as a ripped pillowcase. Which I still haven't actually decided what I'm doing with yet, but I'm working on it.

And, on my weekends, when I have all day to do (pretty much) whatever I want, I love to do this. With my closest beach a 10 minute drive away, it's a great way to spend the day, and my daughter loves to swim. The water may not be the cleanest (we tend to get no-swim advisories every other week) but that's what showers were made for. And soap. So we go anyways. Still haven't caught E.coli, so I think we're good.

I also read. Fantasy, murder mystery, romance, non-fiction, anything you put in front of me, I'll read it.

What kinds of things do you do to disconnect yourself from technology, and from boredom, when the TV is calling your name?

Do you try to change it up, and be creative, or do you have tried and true pastimes that have stayed through the years?

I love Microsoft Paint! My first handmade blog photo :)

Monday Musing: Gardens

So I'm sitting here, this drab humid blah Monday morning, and I'm feeling envy.

Mel and I went up to Kemptville yesterday to meet her uncle and his partner, and they have a garden. In which they grow various foodstuff, including lettuce (which tastes like leaf lettuce, with better texture) radishes (not my thing, but cool) corn, potatoes, tomatoes, etc.

It just makes me wish that I could have one, but my apartment is facing the north, so we get like 2 hours of sunlight (if that) in the morning on our little balcony, and that's it!

If life wasn't so hectic, I would put more effort into planting my mom's vegetable garden back up, but I don't have time to go over there every day or so to pull weeds and whatever else you have to do in a garden. Plus, it's halfway through July, so it seems kinda pointless.

Just makes me sad, I can't wait to have a house with a yard so I can have my garden and learn all the in's and out's of growing food.

Peace and serenity,

Simply Me

To routine, or not to routine, that is the question

Sooo, yoga has pretty much fallen to the wayside, and sleeping in has taken over. I know, I know, not a good idea seeing as I'm just that much more exhausted when I go to work.

It's a vicious cycle really. I can't stop myself from falling asleep, sleeping in, almost being late for work, drinking 2-4 cups of coffee (with my reusable mug so it's really more like 4-8 cups of coffee) and shuffling through the day.

I need to boost myself up and force myself to stay awake, but it's sooo hard...

I will retry to restart my yoga routine this week, starting Monday.

Wish me luck!
