So I decided that my old template and design looked a little drab and childish. It was nice, but it didn't really fit. So I changed it. I changed it one element at a time. I'm still going to be tweaking it here and there, so it's not completely done. Then again, it probably never will be.
Anyone out there have a better eye for design than me? Care to share your insight? I want to look smooth and efficient, but not too serious (because lets face it, too serious is no fun!)
Anyways, this weekend is a blast so far, and I do apologize for my lack of posts, but I needed a little break. I hope to be back on track starting tomorrow, with fresh new information and opinions for all!
As always, if ever you have any questions, comments, ideas or suggestions, feel free to contact me and let me know!
Peace and serenity,
Laura

Waste Management changes in the city
My city is considering changing its waste management contract that expires next year, and no shock that there is a ridiculous amount of commentary. The concept is this:
Currently, we have weekly garbage pick-up, alternating recycling pick-up (1 week black box, 1 week blue box, etc) and seasonal green bin pick-up (every week in the warm months, every 2 weeks in the cold months).
The proposed change would be:
Garbage pick-up every other week, weekly full recycling pick-up (both blue and black boxes each week) and weekly green bin pick-up.
I am all for the proposed change. Why? Because less frequent garbage pick-up will (theoretically and logically) deter people from using their garbage bins as much and cause them to look into other methods of disposal. The green bin has been a pretty big bad guy around here (for a reason I honestly can't fathom) and people tend to avoid recycling because it's hard (or their lazy, take your pick). They will either figure out how to sort their refuse to minimize overflow, have an overflowing garbage bin and whine about it, or stop buying so much crap.
I'm hoping for option #3 on that list, personally. The less junk people buy, the less they will have to throw away. There just won't be as much garbage to worry about. There will be less 'demand' for poorly made products, and people will be able to save more money because they won't be spending it on junk.
Recycling is really not that complicated. Just want to throw that in there. It's really not. Cardboard and paper goes in the black bin. Plastics (hard plastics only) go in the blue bin. Metal goes in the blue bin. Glass (unbroken) goes in the blue bin. You do have to separate mixed materials (paper with plastic glued to it) but it doesn't take that much effort. Really, I promise! Crush your paper and aluminum cans to save even more space.
I hope that the city government decides to go with the proposed changes, I would like to see more frequent pick-up of the more sustainable disposal options. They should also increase garbage bin cost, to prevent people who don't want to recycle from just buying more garbage bins, but I don't think that will happen.
I'll keep crossing my fingers that more people will think of their surroundings when they buy, and when they dispose of their garbage. I'll keep trying to show people that it really isn't that hard. The rest is up to them.

Simply Me

Sugar free trial
I've done it before, and I'm doing it again.
Going sugar free. Initial goal is one week. Seven days. Not so terrifying.
The rules: (remember, these are my rules, so if you want to do this yourself, feel free to use your own rules)
-No refined sugar, which means, no sugar in my tea/coffee, no brown sugar on my oatmeal, no sugar in my muffins, etc
-No artificial sweeteners, no Splenda, no aspartame, nothing
-Allowed: natural sugars, such as those in fruits and vegetables.
Started this on Tuesday, but had some bread which had sugar in it, so official start date was Wednesday October 20th.
Why am I doing this? It's a test, a trial so to speak. It makes me have to remember to check labels of foods, and pushes me more towards raw, whole, real foods.
Also, sugar depresses the immune system, it's addictive, along with countless other issues
It's eye opening, and it's inspiring. I love the feeling. I haven't gotten any withdrawal symptoms, which is surprising. But we'll see.
Once I make it to a week, maybe I'll continue and make it to a month.
(Sidenote: I've also stopped eating meat, and significantly cut down my dairy and egg consumption.)
Have you ever tried something new, just temporarily, to see if you could do it and how you would feel?
Do you think I'm crazy and out of my mind for trying something like this?
Peace and serenity,
Simply Me

Adopting Simplicity: Step 1
In the spirit of keeping things simple, as my blog name says, I figured I would share some backstory.
In case you haven't read the archives of years past, this blog used to be under a different name (same domain). It was called Frugal Nuts are Green.
Silly name, but it was what I had originally been writing about. Living frugally while adopting a green lifestyle.
Eventually, my life got hectic all at once, and I decided to stop blogging for a while and focus on my life for a while.
Life got back on track, and so I decided to log back into my Blogger account and see if my blog was still there. Lo-and-behold, it was! But reading through the archives myself, I realized that my life had changed drastically, and so my blog should too.
I decided to simplify. The name Simply Green seemed appropriate for what I was aiming for in life, and what I was working towards on a daily basis.
Simplicity is something that I believe each person in this world should work towards.
Look around as you head to work, or walk down the street. You are surrounded by people who have something to do. They may not even know what they have to do, but they have to rush to it.
Take a step back in life and look at things that are important to you.
Do you multitask?
Do you fill all of your spare time with something?
Do you have no free time to do anything?
I was there. I took a step back, and looked at what I was spending my time doing.
Multitasking : Thinking I was being more productive, I tried to manage several tasks all at once. I confess, I still do. But it's not as satisfying.
Filling time with something : Doing nothing is "unproductive" so I sought out anything to fill time. Still do, again. Life is a series of steps in the direction you aim for. Perfection is not necessary. Now I look at what I fill my time with, and try to opt for enjoyable pastimes and hobbies.
No free time : There is always free time, if you stop filling your days with something.
In light of this, I am taking steps back everyday to reanalyze the choices I have made, and choices I'm going to make. Every day is a chance to take multiple steps.
Which direction are you aiming?
Peace and serenity,
Simply Me

Day 24 — The person that gave me my favorite memory AND energy news
Well, favourite memory... This is going to get repetitive!! My favourite memory is of my wedding day! Haha, how lame am I, it was just 3 weeks ago (TODAY!! lol) and it's still my favourite, of all others.
Anywho, the person who gave me my favourite memory, obviously, would be my wife.
Yes, again. I know, she comes up a lot. Well, she is important!! Hehe
@WifeyLove You gave me the best day I ever could have asked for, and not only was it perfect... it was perfect! Love you forever and always
Anyways, enough sappy crap, you must be getting tired of this.
I have other news. Since our current provincial government is changing the rates and system for hydro and gas billing (as in, based on peak hours, not a flat rate of an average for the day) we were visited by the JustEnergy fairy, and got to sign a contract to keep a flat rate billing system.
The upside to this, aside from having a flat rate, is that I got the option to choose whether my energy was sourced from "brown" energy sources (oil, coal, etc), 60% green energy, or 100% green energy (for a slight increase in rate). Not only did I pick 100% (of course) but the location of the energy farms (wind, water, solar) is all in Canada! How awesome. Local energy, hehe. Not sure if that's normal, but I was happy about it.
So that's my ramble, maybe not so exciting but I felt like sharing it nonetheless.
Peace and serenity,
Simply Me

Where to start? Any ideas?
So, in case no one has noticed, I love writing. I love expressing myself, and I love writing down and inventing new ideas. I haven't actually written a short story or a chapter since my ex (expletive) decided to erase my personal folder off the computer approximately 2 and a half years ago, deleting 3 short storys, about 100 poems, and a long novel type story that I had been working on for about 5-6 years.
Now, I'm feeling the writing bug infestation coming back, but I'm stuck with a where. Where do I start? I can't go back to my old style of writing, because I have changed too much. I am happy, and so I can't write the depressing, somber, mopey poems of olde. I have my days where I feel like crying all day, and laying in bed staring at the ceiling. But they are much more infrequent.
So where do I start? I have no ideas, no specific inspiration. I need someone to slap me (figuratively) with an idea. I need a muse, and I need one now!
Love stories get old, and that's most of what I can think of, so if any one of you who passes along here, please leave even just a random sentence (as nonsensical as you'd like!) and it will be used to try to inspire this bug.
Thanks to anyone who leaves a note, if you do, I will personally send you whatever I write with the inspiration you have given me.
Love and serenity,
Simply Me

Day 20: The one who broke my heart the hardest ALSO...
Wow, talk about a depressing topic there... Heart breaking... Lucky me I haven't had too much of that.
I will go with someone I was friends with (very good friends, we'd hang out almost everyday at school.) that I dated for just over 2 weeks.
That seems lame, heart broken after 2 weeks, you'd think that'd be like a gust of wind.
But in that 2 weeks, we were very close, and I thought we were happy.
Then we got intimate, and I got dumped on Christmas Day. That night was the first night I cried myself to sleep.
So, DC, this tweet is for you.
@DC You broke my heart and stepped all over it. Now you think we can be friends? Good luck. Please leave me alone and find someone else to hurt.
ALSO!!!
Happy news!!!
I got a new job! I will be working for the federal government in a temporary position. I know, temporary, seems so lame and insecure. But it's through a very good placement agency (run by the government to fill spots that need someone for a spot like maternity leave, back to school, etc) and as long as I show up and I work productively (no issue there) I will keep getting new contracts!
Happy days!!
I start next Monday (the 27th) and I'm counting the days!
And, as always,
Happiness and peace,
Simply Me

Day 18 of 30: The person I wish I could be... Also: I'm back!!
So, slowly settling into married life. Shockingly, it's not so different from unmarried, living together life. Kind of like you don't really feel different on your birthday than you did before, but you know that there is something that changed.
Lots of pictures were taken, now I just have to sift through them and pick my favourites.
Here's a quickie for ya though, just a sneak-peak.
My wife's face is blurred to keep her identity, don't take it personally.
Onwards,
Day 18 of the tweeting challenge, which was put on hold, is now back in business.
So, day 18... The person I wish I could be...

Day 8 of 30: Favourite Internet Friend ... AND fun new ways to reuse old coffee grounds!
So today's Challenge Tweet is to be directed at a favourite internet friend. This may sound surprising, but I actually don't have many internet friends. I have people who's blog I follow, or people who I talk to primarily over the internet, but no one who I can honestly say that I met online and only (or primarily) talk to online. So I'm going to send this tweet out to Crunchy Chicken, who despite being a mother and wife, and having a job, manages to keep the rest of her viewers and readers entertained. Myself included.
@CrunchyChicken You are an inspiration and a fantastic person. You reach out to people you have never met, both to support them and be supported. You rock!
And for today, a fun little link for new ways to reuse coffee grounds!
We've all heard of throwing them in your compost, or sprinkling them in your garden to help keep pests away and fertilize them. Well, here at Simply Green, I am passing on a new list which piqued my interest.
Some of the fresh ideas are: skin exfolliant! (fabulous!) furniture scratch fix! (who doesn't need that when you have pets?) and deodorizer! (for your fridge, skin, shoes, anything!)
So if you like to reuse stuff, and love your coffee, click the photo caption above and read up on The Good Human's top 16 ways to reuse coffee grounds.
Lots of love, all,

Wednesday's small step: New pastimes
Passing the time, beating boredom, is one of the easiest ways to fall into a trap. A trap where you feel like all you can do is sit on the couch, watch garbage TV, and eat junk food. You fall into the cycle, because you're tired, because you're lazy, but you're also bored.
One thing I've found, boredom can be beaten with minimal effort. Television, computer, or any type of technology is, is not needed for breaking through inertia. All you need to do is think a little bit outside of the box. Remember things that you liked doing when you were younger.
Me, personally, I love being artsy, being creative, and spending time outside. So my 'new' pastimes include knitting (right now, working on a curly scarf kind of like this one) or crocheting (which I'm not so good at, haha). I also enjoy thinking of new ways to use things that I have around the house. Such as a ripped pillowcase. Which I still haven't actually decided what I'm doing with yet, but I'm working on it.
And, on my weekends, when I have all day to do (pretty much) whatever I want, I love to do this. With my closest beach a 10 minute drive away, it's a great way to spend the day, and my daughter loves to swim. The water may not be the cleanest (we tend to get no-swim advisories every other week) but that's what showers were made for. And soap. So we go anyways. Still haven't caught E.coli, so I think we're good.
I also read. Fantasy, murder mystery, romance, non-fiction, anything you put in front of me, I'll read it.
What kinds of things do you do to disconnect yourself from technology, and from boredom, when the TV is calling your name?
Do you try to change it up, and be creative, or do you have tried and true pastimes that have stayed through the years?
Peace and serenity,
Simply Me

Wednesday's small steps: Online petitions
I love taking small steps, and some easy ones are signing petitions. Not only is it one more name for the cause you sign, it also helps to reassure you that you aren't the only one who wants these things.
My favourite petition sites are:
Care2
Credo Action
Avaaz
So far that's it. Every now and then they send me e-mail notices of new petitions, and you can do searches for whatever subject you'd like to sign on.
Small steps, can have big effects.
Here are the petitions I've signed so far today:
Stop CNN from parroting FOX News' propaganda
Stop stoning, save Sakineh!
Protect Against New Drilling
Peace and serenity,
Simply Me

More on my personal yoga visit
Since I have time in the morning between when my fiancee leaves and when I have to wake up Emily, I have decided to do yoga in this time instead of go back to sleep.
The upside of this decision is that I am definitely more awake throughout the morning, and I have better energy.
The downside of this is that my legs are very sore right now! I couldn't even finish the tape this morning, my legs were shaking too badly.
Hopefully my strength builds up, and I will be able to do this tape more easily. I've evolved from Gentle Yoga to Ali MacGraw - Yoga Mind & Body
which is a fair bit harder, but it also has better direction (in my opinion) and also more enlightening poses.
Any preferences in your own personal exercise or yoga routines? Let me know, I'd love to hear.
If you do click the link for Ali MacGraw's Yoga Mind & Body, a small commission goes to me. I would recommend however to always check out second hand shops and libraries for the lowest footprint :)

First of many.
Alright, so here's my first blog, and here's hoping that it catches on. I guess I should start with an appropriate intro that doesn't involve recommending a browsing of my profile. So here goes.
I am a 21 year old fast food manager who makes a concerted effort to stay green and thinking of my spot in a bigger perspective. I recycle almost everything, and have recently started working on the other 2 R's: Reduce, and Reuse.
Since I work fast food, I feel absolutely terrible about the enormous and redonkulous amount of waste produced by this form of consumerism. So I try my heart to incorporate some "greening" in at least my store.
Some examples are:
-Bringing home dropped paper bags which would end up in the garbage.
-I bring my own water container for any drinks that I want
-I encourage my co-workers to do the same
-So far, I have convinced some of my co-workers the benefits of reducing the amount of garbage they use, at least while at work.
I do other things as well, such as being very careful when I take something out, so that nothing else falls by accident, and other such things.
And I'm out for now,
Frugal
